Urbandub is a Filipino experimental rock band from Cebu. They are one of the most critically-acclaimed bands in the country, and is now enjoying immense popularity around the Philippines.

Hailing from the "Proud South" City of Cebu, Urbandub has represented their city all across the nation, and now has invaded other parts of Asia as well. Their second album Influence was considered by many music critics as their best album to date. The track "Soul Searching" was named "Song of the Year" in 2003 and Influence was awarded "Album of the Year" in 2004 by the NU 107 Rock Awards.

Their most recent album, Under Southern Lights, was released in 2007 by EMI Music Philippines.

Members:

  • Gabby Alipe (Vocalist/Guitarist)
  • Lalay Lim (Bassist/Vocals)
  • JanJan Mendoza (Drummer)
  • John Dinopol (Lead Guitarist/Vocals)

Urbandub's career thus far has given much inspiration and support to upcoming acts, most of which fall under the Lighter Records stable. These include Faspitch, The Ambassadors, Still, Nuncyspungen (Cagayan de Oro), Nyctinasty and Point Click Kill (Iloilo). Each of them now aspire to take their own roads in music, paving their own way and modeling some of their steps after the success of Urbandub.

The music of Urbandub is a fusion of various influences, and has evolved throughout their albums. Their debut album "Birth" is raw and heavy, with obvious influences of Deftones and other experimental rock bands. With their follow-up "Influence", they found their own sound with the maturity of Gabby Alipe's songwriting and the creative guitar riffs of John Dinopol. "Embrace", their third album which spawned their most successful hits such as "Alert The Armory", "First of Summer", and "Frailty" was a step forward to the band's already-complicated song arrangement mindset and experimentation, using samplers and synthesizers to further enhance their sound. And now with the release of their fourth album "Under Southern Lights", Urbandub has transcended their music to a whole new plane from patented Urbandub-sounding "An Invitation" and "Guillotine" to the more experimental sounds of "Life Is Easy" and "Inside The Mind of A Killer".

Urbandub is considered by many critics as the band to sail across the world. Their one of a kind music; experimental, hard-rocking, and undefinable, has transcended their reputation as one the most respected bands in the Philippines.

Trivia

  • According to the lead vocalist Gabby Alipe behind the band's name:
When we were just starting out..urbandub was supposed to be a reggae band...we were suppose to play reggae mixed with dub, ska, dancehall, hiphop, and rock. A perfect example of what urbandub would have been--is the song "sailing" and "eating me" --that was the style we were suppose to be playing around with--since we were suppose to be a reggae/dub band, hence the name, urbandub. But 'cause of the series of line up changes--and new influences--we became what we are today! The name just kinda got stuck and we never bothered to change it. Soo there you go..the story behind the name "urbandub". [8]
  • Urbandub's music video First of Summer is about a girl rebelliously going out with her boyfriend. The band later released Endless, A Silent Whisper which shows the events that happened before and after what was shown in First of Summer. Both videos were directed by Marie Jamora and were shot in 3 days.
  • Urbandub was interviewed in Animax and later on performed in a show aired on animax called Mad Mad Fun.
  • The mark on Gabby Alipe's right eye is a tatoo
  • In their sophomore live performance on MYX, Gabby Alipe stated that the Urbandub way of making their album is to put exactly ten songs.
  • For a short term of their name, they are labeled as "Udub", short for Urbandub.
  • In one of their recent interviews, Urbandub is very thankful to their online fan base for the support of their "Dubista's". A recent website was created for the fan's of the band, urbandub.freeforums.org
